2009-2010 Provisional Class ProjectAli Kemp Foundation The mission of the Ali Kemp Foundation is to promote safety for women through their T.A.K.E. self-defense training classes. The foundation’s largest fundraiser is Ali’s Runway, a Prom themed fashion show and self-defense class wrapped into one fun, educational event. First, there’s a showcase of the latest prom dress designs modeled by area high school students. After the show, girls and women ages 12 and older are invited to take part in the T.A.K.E. Defense Training. It’s not news that teenagers think they are invincible. It may be a surprise, however, that of the approximately 272,350 sexual assaults that occur in the United States each year, women between 16 and 19 years old are four times more likely to be the victims.
To Kelsey Smith’s family, this news came to them after their daughter was sexually assaulted and murdered in June of 2007. Following Kelsey’s death, her family and friends developed the Kelsey Smith Foundation, Inc. to help raise awareness about sexual assault and prevention. As mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends, the Provisional class was honored to work with Kelsey’s Army to further their awareness initiatives. Provisionals helped package whistle kits that were distributed at presentations by Kelsey’s Army at various organizations in the metro area. In addition to the whistle, the kit includes an information card with tips for preventing sexual assault. Provisionals also helped the Smith’s organize their garage, which has been dedicated to storage for the foundation by sorting family items from foundation items and reorganizing the foundation materials.
